Family Garden Design Humberston

This Family Garden Design in Humberston was created to organise a large new build plot into clear, connected social spaces. The brief called for structure, year-round usability and a modern Mediterranean influence, while keeping maintenance practical.

From the outset, the design was approached as one complete scheme. Each area has its own identity, but materials, planting and repeated forms ensure the garden feels cohesive from front to back.

Arrival and Driveway

Golden gravel is edged with Sorrento block paving to create definition and contrast. Laurel hedging provides privacy, while planting pockets soften the hard landscaping.

A corten steel water feature is set against a steel backdrop panel, creating a strong focal point on arrival. The warm tones lean into the Mediterranean influence and set the tone that continues into the garden beyond.

Indoor Pool

The indoor pool sits to the side of the property, giving privacy without feeling cut off from the garden.

A full glass surround means it can be used all year round, while still keeping the greenery in sight. In summer, sliding doors open the space up so it feels completely connected to the terrace outside.

It’s practical in winter, open in summer and designed to work in every season.

Garden Features

Entertaining and Dining

Here, we moved away from porcelain and introduced clay pavers to bring warmth underfoot and strengthen the Mediterranean feel.

Two pergolas frame the outdoor kitchen and dining spaces, giving definition whilst linking the two zones. Overhead, bamboo screening softens the light and offers a little shade.

Just beyond, a solid roof gazebo creates a more sheltered snug. Inside, a porcelain feature wall with an integrated fireplace means it can be used well beyond summer. An arched window looks out towards the fields beyond, borrowing the view and keeping a connection to the wider landscape. In the evening, festoon lighting adds a warm glow to keep the space inviting.

Lawn and Play Space

An expansive lawn sits at the centre of the design. It keeps the garden feeling open and calm, while giving the family plenty of space to use day to day.

To one side, we created a dedicated play space for the children. Positioning was key. It needed to feel like their own area, but still remain visible from the main seating and dining zones. By separating it from the main lawn, we were able to protect the more formal areas of the garden while still making room for swings, a trampoline and space for ball games.

The result is a garden that works for every age group, without one activity dominating the space.

Secret Garden

At the far end of the garden is a quieter seating area, tucked behind planting and set slightly away from the main social spaces.

This part of the garden feels more enclosed and relaxed. Warm, earthy materials and a bespoke corten steel living wall water feature bring a stronger connection to nature. The sound of cascading water softens the space, while layered planting surrounds the seating to create privacy without closing it in.

It’s a calm retreat within the wider layout, offering a different atmosphere while still feeling connected to the rest of the garden.

Planting Plan

Planting adds structure throughout the garden and helps link each space together.

The palette leans Mediterranean, but it’s grounded in plants that are reliable and low maintenance. Olive trees provide height and character, while evergreen planting keeps the garden looking settled all year round.

Layered planting softens the hard landscaping and adds colour without overwhelming the space. The overall approach ensures the garden works visually in winter as well as summer.

A garden designed to support family life now, and still feel timeless in years to come.
