Family Pool Garden Design Birch Vale

This Family Pool Garden Design in Birch Vale was created to transform a naturally sloping site into a series of connected social spaces. The brief called for structure, clear zoning and a layout that would allow the whole family to spend time outdoors together.

Although the build was delivered in phases, the garden was designed as one complete scheme from the outset. Levels were introduced to work with the slope rather than against it, so each space feels distinct, yet still linked to the next.

Arrival and Driveway

At the front of the property, the driveway has been resurfaced in Marshalls Drivesett. It’s a classic block paving that suits the style of the house and feels in keeping with its character. Sandstone by the front door adds a warmer touch and helps soften the entrance.

Weathered stone globe lights sit within the planting, giving off a gentle glow in the evenings and quietly lighting the way to the house.

Terraces

At the rear of the house, the garden steps down in three clear levels.

Right at the top, just outside the doors, a small corner patio creates a simple spot for a morning coffee. A wooden pergola sits behind it, wrapped in evergreen planting so it feels settled rather than exposed. A two-seater table and chairs sit behind a glass balustrade, giving open views down across the garden.

From here, a staircase designed to match the house leads down to the main entertaining terrace. This mid level is where the garden becomes more social. An outdoor kitchen, BBQ and island sit beneath a large anthracite steel pergola, with relaxed seating and a firepit close by. Sun loungers are positioned on the open patio next to it, so the space works just as well on a quiet afternoon as it does when friends are over.

Broad steps then lead down again to the final level.

Garden Features

Pool Level

The swimming pool sits on the lowest terrace, carefully set into the slope so it feels like part of the landscape rather than something dropped in afterwards.

Retaining walls and hedging frame the space, giving privacy without cutting it off. Porcelain paving runs right to the water’s edge, which helps everything feel cohesive and settled.

Because of the way it’s positioned, the pool is visible from the levels above. It becomes a natural focal point, and as the planting matures around it, it will feel as though it has always been there.

Kitchen Bar and Garden Rooms

To the left of the driveway, long steps lead down through trees and planting into another part of the garden. It’s a separate, secluded space that also sits on a slope, tucked away from the pool terrace at the rear of the house.

Here, an outdoor kitchen and bar sit beneath steel pergolas, forming a clear entertaining zone. Brick planters shape the space, while gravel paths guide you through it.

From this level, steps lead down to the existing garden suite, keeping the different areas connected across the slope. A sunken seating area, set onto Oak Millboard decking and edged with low hedging, creates a more relaxed corner for evenings, with festoon lighting adding warmth after dark.

Beyond this, a smaller patio sits slightly apart, surrounded by evergreen planting. It offers a quieter place to sit, while still feeling part of the wider garden.

The lawn remains open through the centre, linking the spaces together. Although the garden moves across levels and zones, it reads as one considered scheme rather than separate parts.
