Contemporary Cottage Garden Design Roundhay

This contemporary cottage garden design in Roundhay was created for a semi-detached home in Leeds. The aim was to create a contemporary cottage garden that feels colourful, relaxed and easy to use.

Full-width glass doors open directly onto the garden, so the view from inside the house played an important role in the design. The layout needed to feel clear and balanced from the living space as well as out in the garden.

The brief was simple. Bring colour into the space, keep the layout practical and create a garden that works for everyday use as well as entertaining.

The rectangular shape of the garden helped guide the layout rather than restrict it.

Garden Layout and Structure

Because the house opens straight onto the garden, the terrace naturally becomes an extension of the living space. Light porcelain paving keeps the area bright and provides room for an eight-seater dining table.

Rather than trying to disguise the rectangular shape, we worked with it. Defined planting borders and horizontal fencing give the garden structure, while the central lawn keeps the middle open.

From inside the house the view runs through the full length of the garden. Keeping the centre open maintains a clear view from the house to the back boundary. This simple move helps the space feel calm and organised without becoming too structured.

Garden Features

Focal Points and Features

A Japanese red maple sits close to the terrace and is visible from the house. Beside it, the white outdoor bath sits within a small pocket of planting, giving that corner of the garden a more secluded feel.

Elsewhere, a metal water bowl sits close to the dining and seating area. Surrounded by scented planting, it brings gentle sound and movement to this part of the garden.

Existing features were softened rather than removed. Jasmine has been trained across the garage wall and a laurel hedge screens the shed. Working with these elements helped the garden feel more settled.

Planting Approach

Planting gives this garden much of its character. Borders wrap around the lawn with a mix of cottage-style planting and subtle Mediterranean influences.

Hydrangeas, alliums and roses bring colour and seasonal interest, while lavender and rosemary add scent and structure. Evergreen planting helps hold the shape of the borders through the year.

Although the planting feels relaxed, the palette has been kept fairly controlled. Repeating key plants across the borders helps the garden feel cohesive rather than overly busy.

As the planting grows in, the borders will soften the straighter lines of the layout and help the garden feel more established.

This contemporary cottage garden design in Roundhay shows how a rectangular urban garden can feel colourful, structured and easy to live with. From the house, the garden reads as a calm, balanced space. Step outside, and the planting brings colour, scent and movement through the seasons.
