Modern Structured Garden Design Knaresborough

This Modern Structured Garden in Knaresborough was designed to sit comfortably alongside a newly renovated home. The brief was straightforward. Create a clean, modern garden with structure and colour, and a layout that works well day to day.

Because the garden is long, the design works with that length rather than against it. Straight pathways, mirrored planting beds and repeated materials give the space rhythm. From the terrace, you can see right through the garden, which immediately creates a sense of order.

Layout

A Millboard terrace sits directly off the house and gently divides the space into two distinct areas. From here, the garden stretches forward in clear lines.

To one side, a hot tub deck creates a more private corner to unwind. Opposite, sun loungers sit on porcelain paving, positioned to catch the light throughout the day.

Strong lines guide you through the garden and towards the main social spaces. However, while the layout is formal, it never feels severe. The planting softens the edges, and the warmer materials help balance the structure.

Corten steel detailing and horizontal slatted fencing add warmth to the modern palette. Together, the materials keep the look contemporary, but with a relaxed feel that makes the space comfortable to spend time in.

Garden Features

Water Feature

A blade water feature sits on the main sightline from the house, so as soon as you step outside, your eye is drawn towards it.

The gentle movement of water runs quietly in the background. It softens the more formal lines of the layout and adds to the overall sense of calm.

Nearby, a porcelain clad bench is set within planting. It creates a simple place to sit and look back across the full length of the garden.

Social Spaces

Further down the garden, the main entertaining area sits beneath a timber pergola. Positioned towards the bottom of the plot, it feels slightly set apart from the house, which makes gatherings here feel more like an occasion.

The barbecue area has been designed with enough worktop space and built-in storage to function independently. Even though it sits away from the kitchen, everything you need is there, so you can settle in and stay put.

Festoon lighting allows the space to carry on into the evening, while the pergola provides shelter and definition. The pergola marks this as the final stop in the garden. A clear place to gather at the end of the long layout.

Planting

Planting softens the more formal hardscaping and helps balance the straight lines that run through the garden.

Hornbeam hedging keeps the boundaries neat and private, while multi stem olive and acer trees introduce height and seasonal change. Lower planting brings colour and texture throughout the year, with layers that spill gently over some of the harder edges.

As the garden matures, the greenery will continue to blur the structure slightly, giving the space a more relaxed feel while still maintaining its strong framework.

The result is a contemporary structured garden that feels calm and comfortable to spend time in. Ordered enough to feel intentional, yet relaxed enough to enjoy with family and friends, whether it’s a quiet afternoon or a full house.
