Tiered Garden Massingham

This Massingham garden came with a challenge. The space sits on a steep slope from the house down to the lawn. Uneven ground and water run-off made it difficult to manage, and the garden was rarely used. Our clients wanted usable outdoor living space. Somewhere to relax, host friends and spend more time outdoors. From the outset, the design focused on introducing new levels that work with the site. By creating a series of terraces, we were able to shape clear areas to lounge, soak and gather, while still keeping an open lawn for everyday use. As a result, the garden now feels easier to move through and far more usable. One of the key features is the open outdoor bath. Set into the planting and tucked away from view, it offers a quiet spot to slow down and enjoy the garden. Simple materials and clean detailing help it sit naturally within the space. Just above the lawn, a sandstone terrace creates a natural place to gather in the evenings. The curved seating was custom-built to fit the sofa exactly, giving the area a settled, considered feel. Raised planters and a sail shade add a sense of privacy, while festoon lighting and a fire pit bring warmth as the light fades. Elsewhere in the garden, a wildlife pond brings nature into the space. It adds movement and sound, and creates a softer, more natural contrast to the structured areas. It’s now a garden that feels calm, comfortable and easy to spend time in.
