Mediterranean Courtyard Garden Design Nettleham

This Mediterranean Courtyard Garden Design in Nettleham was created to transform an existing courtyard and large open garden into a series of connected social spaces. The aim was to introduce structure and warmth, while making each area practical and easy to use day to day.

Although the build was delivered in phases, the garden was designed as one complete scheme from the outset. Clear zoning underpins the layout. Each space has its own purpose, yet the materials and planting link everything together, so the garden feels cohesive rather than pieced together.

The Courtyard

The design begins with the courtyard beside the house. Here, we used symmetry to bring order and balance. A long dining table sits centred within Florence range porcelain paving, edged with Calico sandstone cobbles for contrast and subtle detail.

Planting softens the surrounding brickwork and introduces scent into the space. Lavender, santolina and ginkgo add height and seasonal interest, while climbers gently wrap across the structure above. As a result, the courtyard feels sheltered and sociable, without ever feeling enclosed.

A built-in BBQ sits within easy reach of the table, allowing the courtyard to function naturally as an extension of the kitchen.

Moving Through the Garden

Movement was considered carefully from the start. A bespoke corten steel arch marks the step from courtyard to main garden. During the day, it frames the view ahead. In the evening, integrated lighting gives it quiet presence.

Stepping through the arch feels like a change in pace. The courtyard is intimate. Beyond it, the space opens up.

Garden Features

Layout and Flow

Beyond the arch, the feel of the garden shifts.

Where the courtyard is linear and structured, the main garden becomes softer. Curved porcelain pathways move through the lawn, leading you towards a circular water feature set centrally within the space. It sits directly in line with the dining table, so your eye is drawn straight through from one area to the next.

Circular forms are repeated in the water feature and corten steel ring planters. This creates a softer contrast to the symmetry of the courtyard, while still feeling connected.

The water adds gentle movement and sound that can be enjoyed from the surrounding seating areas. Timber and corten steel introduce warmth that works naturally against the green lawn and layered planting.

Defined Social Spaces

To the right of the garden, a timber pergola creates a relaxed seating area with views back across the lawn and over the water feature. It’s positioned to feel part of the wider space, rather than tucked away.

The structure offers shade through the day and, with festoon lighting overhead, becomes a natural spot to settle in as the evening draws in.

Nearby, sun loungers rest on porcelain paving, placed to catch the best of the light while still feeling connected to the surrounding planting.

The hot tub deck sits slightly apart from the main entertaining areas. Stepping tiles guide you towards it, and evergreen hedging frames the space, giving it privacy without cutting it off from the rest of the garden.

Planting Plan

Planting adds structure to the layout of the garden. Japanese laurel hedging provides enclosure and privacy, helping to define the edges of each space. Meanwhile, multi-stem olive and ginkgo trees introduce height and seasonal interest.

The palette leans Mediterranean, but it’s grounded in plants that are reliable and easy to live with. Agave, rosemary and santolina sit alongside softer layers of poppies, scabiosa and ornamental grasses. It’s a mix that brings texture and movement, without turning the garden into a full-time job.

The overall approach ensures the garden works visually in winter as well as summer.

Designed for Everyday Living

This project is about more than individual features. It is about how the spaces relate to one another. Dining near the house. Lounging beneath the pergola. A focal water feature drawing you through the centre. Private corners balanced with open lawn.

Every decision, from materials to layout, supports that sense of cohesion.

A Mediterranean courtyard garden design that feels structured, layered and ready to evolve as the planting matures.
