Country Garden Retford

This walled country garden in Retford sits alongside a late 1800s property and needed to feel true to its setting. Our clients are keen gardeners, with lots of established planting already in place. Their brief was to enhance what they loved, not start from scratch. They also wanted a quiet spot to enjoy a morning coffee, along with space to grow and nurture plants outdoors.

From the outset, the design focused on working with the existing garden. We were able to retain most of the planting, including the climbing roses that frame the house. At the same time, new paths and raised beds were introduced to give the garden structure, while still keeping the space open and relaxed. Planting was kept low in key areas, helping preserve views out towards the surrounding countryside.

A bespoke timber arbour sits against the original brick wall and creates a sheltered nook for reading or sitting quietly, with views back across the garden and out towards the church beyond.

Closer to the house, a slate-roof gazebo sits on a sandstone courtyard, just off the patio doors. As a result, it works as an outdoor room throughout the year, softened with raised brick planters filled with camellias and fragrant star jasmine. Festoon lighting adds a warm, inviting feel.

Finally, at the far end of the garden, a lean-to greenhouse provides a dedicated space for year-round growing. A wildlife pond and Welsh slate water feature add gentle movement and sound, helping the garden feel calm and settled.

It’s a space that feels established, personal and deeply connected to the house and landscape.
